Our living room & dining nook

When we downsized from our Chattanooga Home to our small Atlanta loft in 2019, I had to sell my favorite tulip dining table. As you can see from the photos above, there was no way a 72” dining table was going to fit in our new space. It was a strange feeling being so sad to part from a piece of furniture because I’ve never been one to be attached to things. I think that whole having to sell everything and move across the country thing helped in my ability to let go of stuff.

Shortly after moving to Atlanta, I realized it wasn’t the table I was so sad to sell; it was the idea that I could no longer fit ten people at dinner and host like I used to in Chattanooga. Don’t get me wrong; there are so many perks of small living that, for me, outweigh living in a larger home. However, I struggled with the fact that I wouldn’t be hosting as I had in the past.

Fast forward a year and numerous rearrangements of our strange living space, I started stalking #diningnooks. And wow, so much inspiration. My grandmother (who is exceptionally talented in the home decor department), had suggested months prior that one of my corners could fit a small café table, which planted a tiny seed. I knew the space could be awkward, we’d have to give up the TV (another blog post for another day - but best decision eva), and our room wouldn’t look “normal.” But I took the leap and decided functionality, and being able to host people outweighed our space looking a bit bizarre. Oh, and now we can’t have ESPN playing all day in our living room? Okay, maybe this was starting to look like an all-around win ;).

We built out our dining nook during COVID, and it was such perfect timing. This little space has been great to work from (love the white backdrop for Zoom calls), ideal spot to host family and friends for dinner and Michael and I love having a glass of wine and talking through our days in our little nook in the evenings.

Although I’m all about feng shui and having a gorgeous space, functionality outweighed beauty this time around. Luckily, I still think it turned out quite nicely.

I’ve linked all of the pieces above if you’re interested in making your little dining nook.
